San Angelo

Family Network

Based on data from the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, over 200 children in San Angelo and surrounding areas are growing up without either parent. While there are licensed foster parents in the area, about 100 children are in a DFPS kinship placement. It is estimated that 1500 Concho Valley children are living with relatives without DFPS involvement.

Kinship families, which consist of grandparents, other relatives, and family friends, are stepping up, ensuring children have a safe and nurturing home.

Kinship placements have been shown to reduce the trauma of removal, maintain connections with family and community, and promote placement stability and child well-being.

Research has shown that, overall, children in foster care experience more stability and better outcomes when they are placed with relative caregivers. Children placed with kin are also more likely to experience fewer placement disruptions and exhibit improved behavior.

However, kinship families often find their willingness is not met with the support and resources they need to raise healthy children. Just as foster parents need a strong network, kinship families also need help.

This gap can be closed by providing financial assistance and evidence-informed programs that strengthen kinship caregivers' capacity to provide safe, permanent, and nurturing  homes for vulnerable children.

San Angelo Family Network is committed to walk alongside kinship families, providing resources to ensure positive permanency.

San Angelo Family Network is classified as a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization by the standards of the Internal Revenue Service (IRS).
